Paul Merson believes that Manchester United should hire Brighton manager Graham Potter but claimed that the club will not as he ‘is not a big name’.

The Red Devils appointed Ralf Rangnick as interim manager following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after a run of humiliating results.

However, the German will only stay at the club until the end of the season and United will need to bring in a permanent manager at Old Trafford.

Merson insisted that the Seagulls boss is worthy of the role as he claimed he was a big fan.

‘I am a big fan of his,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘I think he plays brilliant football.

‘If I was Manchester United, then I would be watching Potter. The way they play their football. They haven’t got the quality of Man United players. And they play great football.

‘If I was Man United. I would be monitoring him. I would think “why not go for him?”.’

But the pundit believed that United will not go for Potter as a permanent manager as he is not a big enough name for the fans.

‘They won’t because he’s not a name. It’s as simple as that,’ he added.

‘Then, the Man United fans will be like “why are we getting somebody from Brighton for?”. And that’s how it works. I think he’s outstanding.’

Everton’s former director of football Marcel Brands had reportedly wanted Potter to replace Carlo Ancelotti last summer but the Toffees plumped for Rafa Benitez.

The seemingly cursed decision ended in misery at Goodison last weekend as the Merseyside Blues sacked the former Liverpool manager after a 2-1 defeat to Norwich.

However, with Brands no longer at the club, it appears Everton will not be consider Potter to take charge in the wake of Benitez’s departure as they have reportedly offered Belgium boss Roberto Martinez an interim position.
