Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that he is open to bringing in more new additions as the club scraped a win over Everton on Saturday.

In a game that was marred by a serious injury suffered by Everton defender Ben Godfrey, the Blues secured three points thanks to a first half penalty from Jorginho.

Speaking after the game at Stamford bridge, Tuchel hailed the Italian midfielder’s contribution but acknowledged that his team could benefit from bringing in some additional signings before the transfer window closes:

‘For us, we win 1-0 from Jorginho. Very classic! We know we have to get better, but a win helps. For the atmosphere and spirit, we have the next step.’

‘We can add, but we are open for everything. We can use new energy, fresh legs and fresh input. I think we could use some more input and some more quality.’ He added.

Despite taking the lead, and dominating possession throughout the game, Tuchel’s team failed to build on their advantage in the second half.

Though his team fell short of his expectations in victory, Tuchel praised his players for their ability to secure the three points:

‘I could assume that we are not on our highest level. Pre-season was turbulent. The last week of training was very promising. Second half, we had simply not enough movement on the ball. Less movement, more ball losses. In the end, ten minutes extra time, a bit strange, but we hung in, and did what we had to do to keep a clean sheet.’

The victory also saw Marc Cucurella make his Chelsea debut, just days after signing from Brighton amidst interest from Manchester City. The 24-year-old Spainard appeared as a substitute in the second half and Tuchel was pleased with his performance:

‘I’m very happy with 20 minutes from Cucurella.’ He said.

Despite picking up the win at Goodison Park, questions remain as to whether Chelsea can challenge for the Premier League title this season without signing an out-an-out striker to replace the departed Lukaku.

Commenting after the game, Jamie Redknapp stated his belief that the Blues will need a new forward:

‘They need a number nine, a striker. Diego Costa, before that Drogba, was impeccable in that position. Sterling might be the striker for them. Broja is a good young player, but he’ll be in and out of the team. It’s very hard to find a good striker.’

Chelsea will next play host to Tottenham on August 14, marking the first fixture at Stamford Bridge of the 22/23 Premier League season.
