Australia captain Aaron Finch has lifted the lid on the ‘freak accident’ that ruled Josh Inglis out of the T20 World Cup, revealing there was ‘blood everywhere’ after he cut his hand.
The wicket-keeper cut his right hand when the metal handle of his 6-iron snapped on impact as he was playing at the New South Wales Golf Club on Wednesday.
Inglis was subsequently taken to hospital and Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed on Thursday the injury had ruled the 27-year-old out of the tournament.
Josh Inglis suffered a freak injury just days out from Australia’s first World Cup game and was spotted in training on Thursday wearing a heavy bandage around his right hand
And Finch admitted he and his teammates were taken aback when they realised the severity of Inglis’ injury.
‘That was a freak accident,’ he told reporters on Friday.
‘I was playing in Josh’s group and I feel so bad for him.
‘We didn’t realise the club broke, we just thought he hit it poorly, and he looked down and there’s blood everywhere.

‘It was pretty distressing there for a little bit.’
Inglis would have been unlikely to feature in Australia’s opener against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday and his place in the defending champions’ 15-man group has gone to the highly-rated Cameron Green.
That means Australia head into the tournament with Matthew Wade as the only designated wicket-keeper, a decision which Finch conceded was a risk.
‘We’re taking the risk and not going with the extra keeper, which obviously has a degree of risk to it,’ he said.

Cameron Green has been drafted into Australia’s 15-man squad as a replacement for Inglis

‘We feel as though Cam [Green] gives us a little bit better balance to the squad. That’s definitely a risk [not selecting a replacement for Wade], there’s no doubt about that.’
Opening batter David Warner donned the gloves in Thursday’s training practice and Finch confirmed the 35-year-old would step up and fill in for Wade if required.
Australia begin their title defence on Saturday against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground in a repeat of last year’s final.
