Anthony Hudson insists he has NOT thought about being USMNT’s full-time coach

US men’s national team interim head coach Anthony Hudson insists he hasn’t thought about his future with the side as the federation searches for a permanent successor to Gregg Berhalter.

Berhalter’s contract expired on December 31, and Hudson was named interim boss four days later ahead of the team’s friendlies vs. Serbia and Colombia later that month.

And while a permanent coach has yet to be decided on – which may not happen until September, according to ESPN – Hudson is focusing on the task at hand for the USA.

 ‘I haven’t thought about it,’ Hudson said on a Zoom call with reporters. ‘I’m just taking it a camp at a time and it’s a unique situation. I will just take it — again — a day at time. 

‘I explained before about it, that I’ll do my best, and I feel I have enough experience to know how to do the right thing now for these games and also have one eye on to do what’s right for the team for the long term.

Hudson was previously a USMNT assistant and also coached the Colorado Rapids from 2017-19

 ‘I feel I have the experience and capability to do that, but that’s all I’m doing. I’m just doing my job. I say to myself every day when I say to people, laugh to people around me, ‘It’s just a day at a time.’ So we’ll see how things play out.’

Hudson’s promotion to head coach came after a hugely choppy time for US Soccer – despite a promising Round of 16 finish at the World Cup.

Following Gio Reyna’s sparing playing time at the tournament, his mother Danielle disclosed to US Soccer that Berhalter had kicked his now-wife Rosalind during a 1991 argument.

Ex-USA captain Claudio Reyna also threatened to share details of Berhalter’s past during the tournament, according to ESPN.

Claudio denied making any threats. 

Berhalter had spoken publicly after the tournament about a player – later revealed to be Reyna – nearly being sent home for not ‘meeting expectations’ with his effort, with Reyna later expressing surprise that the incident was not kept ‘in-house.’

The USSF commissioned a law firm to investigate the claims into Berhalter. The conclusion, published this month, said there was no legal impediment to appointing Berhalter again.

While US Soccer searches for a permanent head coach, Hudson has at least one more game to focus on.

The USA will face El Salvador in Orlando on Monday as they look to top their CONCACAF Nations League group. 

 ‘My objective is pretty clear,’ Hudson said. ‘We want to make sure that for this camp, we put on a very good experience for the players and the staff, and the bottom line is help support them to be at their best and win these two games.

‘And then beyond that, if I’m asked to, we’ll do the next camp.’
