Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney opens up on agony of losing friends to suicide

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney has opened up about mental health after his friends tragically took their own lives. 

The Scotland international has been one of the Premier League‘s best left-backs since joining the Gunners in 2019 from Celtic.

In Amazon’s new All or Nothing Arsenal documentary, he revealed that he struggled mentally when he first made the move to London, and has also opened up on losing friends to suicide.

During the show he said: ‘It was hard to start with, I was really struggling. Really low point. Homesickness was terrible to start with.

‘Outside training you had a lot of time to think. I’m not saying I was ever in a bad, bad place where I was suicidal.

‘But my friends have been. Two or three of them have committed suicide, lost their life. You’re with these people and you don’t know a thing. They’ve not spoke.

‘So I think I feel a certain responsibility to try and help as much as I can because I kind of know how it feels to be in a certain place.’

The 25-year-old made his Celtic debut in 2015, before earning his first Scotland cap just one year later.

His performances for the Hoops earned him a £25million move to Arsenal in 2019, moving away from his family and friends to play in the Premier League.

He has gone on to make 87 appearances for the Gunners over three seasons, also scoring four goals.

Tierney also revealed during the All or Nothing series that he lives with Gunners chief cook and friend Johnny McCallum.

He said: ‘He can get quite angry sometimes if we get beat, but that’s just passion for you. That’s what he cares about so I stay out his way.

‘Johnny knows if I’m angry, he leaves the food and just bolts.’
