Australia and sledging on the cricket field go hand in hand – and a soon-to-be-released documentary from the 2019 Ashes reveals just how savage the likes of David Warner and Tim Paine were with the iconic urn up for grabs.

Titled Phoenix from the Ashes, the behind-the-scenes program provides plenty of on-field chat from the five Test matches in England.

History shows Australia returned home with the urn after the series was drawn, with both nations winning two Tests after the second Test at Lord’s finished in a draw.

Predictably, the Aussies provided plenty of banter in a bid to unsettle their fierce rivals, with David Warner and wicketkeeper Tim Paine leading the verbal onslaught.

In a first, the audio was taken from stump cam, with the Aussies ruthless with ball in hand.

The likes of Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Joe Denly and Jack Leach were targeted in the middle – as was world-class all-rounder and current England captain Ben Stokes.

Memorable zingers aimed at England’s batsmen included Paine telling his teammates that Burns wouldn’t run his mouth as he ‘doesn’t have his big boys around’ and ‘I tell you what he (Denly) does. He looks straight at the screen to see if he’s on there.’

That sledge bluntly suggested Denly is vain.

Stokes was also singled out after he was struck on the helmet at Headingley.

Warner can be heard mockingly asking if ‘Stokesy’ was OK, as tensions reached boiling point.

The New Zealand born 31-year-old had the last laugh, with his unbeaten 135 from 219 balls in the second innings securing a memorable one wicket victory.

Stokes’ knock has since been described as one of the best in Ashes history.

Phoenix from the Ashes will be released worldwide on Amazon Prime on August 26.
