Borussia Dortmund ‘are interested in £13m Man United youngster Hannibal Mejbri’ – but Erik ten Hag ‘wants to give the midfielder the chance to prove himself in pre-season’

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested in pursuing a deal for Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri.

Mejbri spent last season on loan playing in the Championship for Birmingham City and has apparently caught the interest of a host of European clubs.

The 20-year-old midfielder starred during his first full season in senior football, making 40 appearances across the Championship and FA Cup, scoring one goal and registering six assists.

Dortmund are looking for a replacement midfielder following Jude Bellingham’s record-breaking departure for Real Madrid and are considering bringing Mejbri to the club, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Last season’s Bundesliga runners-up are reportedly willing to pay £13million for Mejbri with the fee including a series of performance-related add-ons.

United and Dortmund have been involved in a series of high-profile transfers between the two clubs in recent years with Jadon Sancho’s move to Old Trafford in 2021 their last piece of business.

Mejbri has been highly regarded as a player for the future by the United fanbase who have watched his development with interest since joining the club in 2019 from Monaco.

He arrived as a 17-year-old and has rose through the youth team ranks at Carrington, first joining the Under 18s side and eventually progressing to make his first-team debut in a Premier League clash with Wolves two years ago.

United may reject any move for Mejbri however, with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag said to be keen on giving the youngster a chance to prove himself in pre-season.

They will travel to Norway, Scotland, Ireland and America on their pre-season tour ahead of the new season, with Mejbri set to be involved in warm-up games before they make a decision on his future at the club.

If those assessments show he isn’t ready for first-team chances then United will reportedly sanction his departure but could choose to only grant a loan deal instead of a permanent transfer.

United would likely look to include a sell-on clause in any deal for Mejbri as they have previously done with academy talents in an effort to avoid situations similar to Paul Pogba being sold to Juventus before moving back to the club in an £89m deal.

Improvements in recent seasons have seen Mejbri included in the Tunisian national team after he decided to switch international allegiances from France.

He has made 24 appearances for Tunisia and featured at the Qatar World Cup, playing 10 minutes against Denmark in a group stage match.
