Priceless moment British girl who decided to support the Aussie cricket team gets an incredible gift from her idol Alyssa Healy
- Spirit of cricket is alive and well in England
- Both English and Aussie fans praised Healy
- Young fan was left beaming after class act
Evie Denyer might be a British schoolgirl with a broad English accent, but she is also a diehard fan of the Australian women’s cricket team – and it’s all thanks to Alyssa Healy.
Five years ago, Evie and her dad went to Chelmsford to watch England play Australia in a T20 match, with the youngster choosing to wear Australian kit rather than English gear.
Healy spotted her in the crowd and went to meet her after the game, gifting her a signed cap and posing for photos.
She obviously made a huge impression, because this week Evie came to Lord’s to watch the third T20 clash in the Ashes series – wearing the same signed cap.
You couldn’t wipe the smile of young Evie’s face after the young Brit – who supports Australia because they’re ‘the best cricket team in the world’ – met her idol Healy for a second time
She caught the attention of the Australian cricket side’s media team, who interviewed her before the match as she declared Healy to be her favourite player.
‘Fact or opinion, Australia are the best cricket team in the world?’ Evie asked.
‘Fact!’ she boldly declared.
So after the match, Healy knew she just had to see her young fan again.
This time, she presented Evie with her match-worn wicketkeeping gloves and signed them for good measure.
‘Thanks for coming out to support,’ Healy said.
‘If you’re going to be a wicketkeeper, you’re going to need some gloves, right?
‘How about you take some gloves with you?’
Needless to say, Evie was rapt, saying: ‘First the hat and now the gloves!’
‘We need more wicketkeepers in the world,’ Healy said.
Healy gifted Evie a signed cap five years ago and this week went one better by signing her wicketkeeping gloves and handing them to the youngster
Healy has been a champion for the Aussie cricket team since 2010 and is married to men’s star Mitchell Starc
And there was one more surprise for young Evie.
‘Seeing as we just lost, reckon I can get a hug?’ Healy asked.
Evie was more than happy to oblige, capping off another memorable day at the cricket for the young Brit.
It was a wholesome moment that cricket fans of both sides could appreciate.
‘Absolute class act. Hard to remember the kids and fans when you’ve lost on the pitch and you’re naturally gutted but @ahealy77 just being a world class wicket keeper and a world class role model. Love this,’ an English cricket supporter posted.
‘Got something in my eye. What a wonderful gesture, wearing the gloves for England one day no doubt,’ another local fan commented.
‘What a pair of legends. One current. One for the future. The world needs more role models like @ahealy77,’ added another English fan.
