  • Fernandes claims he was listening to his team-mate and denies ignoring him

Bruno Fernandes has fired back at suggestions he blanked new Manchester United team-mate Andre Onana during a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid on Thursday.

In the first half, Madrid were awarded a corner and Onana began organising the United players, who had come up to defend the set-piece.

Fernandes was among the group but appeared to pay little attention to his goalkeeper’s instructions.

The United skipper didn’t make eye contact with Onana and brushed past him as he attempted to relay his commands, prompting criticism online.

One video of the incident which gained traction on social media, was captioned:  ‘Captain Bruno doesn’t want anyone to correct him or advise him. Bruno completing (sic) ignores new signing Onana.’

However, Fernandes claims he was listening to his team-mate and was getting into the position Onana had marshalled him into.

In response to the post, Fernandes wrote in the comment section below: ‘Nice how you could see me ignoring him when I was going to the place he was telling me to be positioned in the corner.

‘Nice try to make it look bad.’

Man Utd went on to lose the game 2-0 with Jude Bellingham and Joselu getting on the scoresheet for Madrid.

Onana made his United debut on the night and despite not being able to keep a clean sheet, there were positive signs of things to come.

The 27-year-old’s distribution and composure with the ball at his feet were excellent and Erik ten Hag will doubt be pleased with what he saw from his new £47m signing.
