BUMBLE AT THE TEST: Stuart Broad will be an asset for Sky’s commentary team but first England need to get him to deliver one last magical spell

  • England need retiring Stuart Broad to produce one final magical spell
  • Once he has finished playing Broad will prove to be an asset for Sky Sports

On day four of the fifth Ashes Test, England were left frustrated by Australia‘s strong start.

Australia made untroubled progress to 135-0 before play was abandoned due to rain.

With Usman Khawaja on 69 and David Warner 58 not out, Australia need 249 more runs to win.

It is now set up for an eventful final day of an epic Ashes series.

Mail Sport columnist David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd gives us his unique insight from the fifth and final Test.

Times up on hat-trick

I was sat in the media centre when Simon Hughes said: ‘You look a bit miserable, Bumble.’ To which I replied: ‘It’s because I’ve lost my hat!’ So after asking everyone if they had seen a one-piece felt hat, I am delighted that it was found. In fact, it was never actually lost. Elizabeth Ammon from The Times said that she saw it on the floor and was looking after it..

I know a team who need a bowler

What a beautiful moment on Sunday morning. Stuart Broad has been a warrior for England. With Jimmy Anderson, the pair have formed England’s greatest ever bowling partnership.

Even on the odd occasion when England would inexplicably leave Broad out, he would return and produce those breathtaking spells. And he has never been short of voicing his opinion, either, so I’m sure he will slip nicely into the Sky commentary team. Mind you, they do need bowlers.

Following his retirement it seems clear that Stuart Broad will be an asset for Sky Sports

Aussies worry me

I must admit that I was nervous when England were bowled out with two days to go on a pitch that has gone docile. So it did not surprise me when Australia responded with their best opening partnership of the series. I fear that my pre-series prediction will be correct…

It all comes down to this

And so this epic series hinges on the final day. It has been so gruelling for the players. England have pounded Australia since going two-nil down but Australia have not crumbled.

There is a reason why they are ranked the best team in the world. Either way, whoever comes out on top today, hats off to both teams. It has been such a memorable series.

However it ends up this has been an epic Ashes series with some excellent performances

My flat-white fight

So there I was minding my own business, stood perfectly still and watching the world go by, as you do on a Sunday…. when a bloke comes along carrying his coffee and crashes into me. A full and frank discussion took place as he tried to indicate that it was my fault!

Time for one last Broadside

This is the end game. England have certainly captured the imagination with rip-roaring cricket. But the Aussies have ultimately captured the urn.

Some people will say that is all that matters but drawing 2-2 is a million times better than losing 3-1. England need to get Stuart Broad’s legs pumping to deliver one of those magical spells.
