Casemiro, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez hailed as Man United reach Europa League last-16

The roles of Casemiro, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were highlighted after Manchester United fought back to beat Barcelona in their Europa League play-off tie and reach the last-16.

Robert Lewandowski’s first half penalty had given the visitors a 1-0 lead on the night at Old Trafford.

Goals from Fred and Antony saw the Red Devils turn the match around in the second half to earn a 2-1 win, with Erik ten Hag’s side advancing 4-3 on aggregate. 

Former Manchester United star Robin van Persie highlighted the importance of Casemrio and Varane, insisting their experience is vital to helping the team to come through tough moments.

The pair’s winning mentality was noted following their trophy laden careers at Real Madrid, before joining Manchester United.

‘Casemiro, Varane, these guys are winners and can get you through a tough moment in a game,’ Van Persie said.

‘They have been showing it. Even though they were behind, I still felt they could come back in the game.

‘That is the sign of a top team.’

Owen Hargreaves also highlighted Lisandro Martinez, with the Argentine World Cup winner having become a vital part of the defence since joining the club from Ajax.

‘I think Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez were fabulous,’ Hargreaves said. ‘The spirit of those two, Martinez and Casemiro was fantastic.’

Casemiro had played a crucial role in preventing Manchester United from falling 2-0 down, with the Brazilian producing two vital blocks after David de Gea’s pass was intercepted before half-time.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag agreed with the ‘important personalities’ highlighted in his squad.

The Dutchman also praised the bravery of wingers Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, as well as Bruno Fernandes.

‘I think we have some great personalities in the team like Rafa [Varane] and Martinez,’ Ten Hag said.

‘Antony and Garnacho don’t fear anyone, then Bruno and Casemiro of course. 

‘We have great personalities. When you have a setback they carry on and try to get a result.’

The Red Devils now take their place in the last-16 of the Europa League, while they face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

United also remain in contention in both the Premier League and Europa League.
