But Bordeaux went behind in the 22nd minute on Friday night after Luca Buades scored for the visitors.

And the Rodez midfielder was attacked by a fan on the pitch as he celebrated with team-mates.

After receiving attention from the medical staff, the 25-year-old was removed from the pitch and the players returned to the dressing room.

A decision was then taken to abandon the match, with Bordeaux now needing a win and a four-goal advantage to usurp Metz to second spot.

Referee Nicolas Rainville later spoke at a press conference to explain the decision, stating that Buades was suffering from concussion.

He said: ‘The elements are conclusive, the player cannot resume the meeting because concussed.

‘We have respected the rules, namely that the match will not resume.’

An LFP statement read: ‘Following the attack on the player Lucas Buades by a supporter from the Bordeaux stand, the Bordeaux-Rodez meeting was officially stopped by the referee and the LFP delegates.

‘The LFP Disciplinary Commission will meet on Monday to study the follow-up.

‘The LFP strongly condemns this act of violence against a player and wishes a speedy recovery to Lucas Buades.’
