Chelsea fans savage Mason Mount’s farewell claiming his message was ‘scripted’

Chelsea fans have ripped into Mason Mount over his farewell message as he gets set to join Manchester United in a £60m deal.

In a video message posted on Tuesday, the midfielder reflected on some of the highlights of his time at Chelsea as both a senior and academy player, including their Champions League triumph in 2021.

He acknowledged that some Chelsea fans might not like his decision but said it was one that was right for him in this moment of his career.

However, his video appears to have gone down like a lead balloon with Chelsea supporters who feel that this message was ‘scripted’.

They also pointed out that Mount had blonde hair in his video, though he has been pictured with brown hair at United’s Carrington training facility for his medical this week.

Chelsea fan page Chessy GPT wrote: ‘Someone said that Mount used Chat GPT to generate his goodbye script’, with a laughing emoji.

One supporter described Mount’s video as a ‘joke’, tweeting: ‘I was gutted that we let Mason Mount go, but that farewell video is a joke, couldn’t even be bothered to hide that he was reading a script.’

Another Chelsea fan commented: ‘I’d really like to know who even suggested the script for Mount’s goodbye video coz that sure as hell wasn’t genuine, heartfelt or remotely close to what a PR agency would come up with… Pathetic!!’

Twitter user @CFC_Lucy pointed out Mount’s hair colour being different to that of pictures at Carrington as she wrote: ‘Funny how Mount had brown hair in the picture of him outside Carrington yesterday and in the goodbye video his hair is blonde. Been planned for a while, clearly.’

Blues’ fan account Futbol Chelsea wrote: ‘What a rubbish PR statement, reading off a script which has no doubt been written for him. Glad this saga is over and done with and we no longer have to talk about Mason Mount anymore. Good riddance.’

Well-known Chelsea fan Rory Jennings posted on Twitter: ‘Reading a script and listing all the reasons why you shouldn’t leave Chelsea. Can’t believe how misguided Mason Mount is with this weird, self-indulgent video…’

Another fan even suggested that Mount should have stuck to a written statement, despite the England international midfielder saying he preferred to speak to camera.

@FCFactors commented: ‘I really thought there was going to be lot more in this video. Should’ve stuck to a written statement.’

While another Chelsea fan posted: ‘It’s all good bud. Enjoy your new chapter, unfortunately in my eyes you are not a Chelsea legend. But as a solid player from our academy, I salute you. If you really wanted to be at Chelsea you would of stayed and the club comes first.’

Mount has spent 18 years at Chelsea after first joining the club as a youth player, but is now heading to Old Trafford in a £60million move after undergoing his medical at Carrington this week.

Given his strong connection to Stamford Bridge, the 24-year-old felt the need to address Blues fans directly in a personal video message.

Speaking on Instagram, Mount said: ‘Hi Chelsea fans, given the speculation over the last six months, this may not come as a surprise to you. But it doesn’t make it any easier to tell you I’ve made the decision to leave Chelsea.

‘I feel you deserve more than just a written statement so I wanted to tell you directly how grateful I’ve been for all of your support over the last 18 years.

‘I know some of you won’t be happy with my decision but it’s what’s right for me at this moment in my career.

‘I joined Chelsea when I was six years old and we’ve been through a lot together, winning the Youth Cup, my player of the year awards, the Super Cup, the Club World Cup, and of course that unforgettable night when we won the Champions League.’

Mount took the opportunity to thank various individuals for helping him on his journey at Chelsea, including former managers Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter and academy bosses Jim Fraser and Neil Bath.

He added: ‘I want to say thank you to the academy Jim and Neil for being so influential from such a young age. The managers I’ve worked under, Frank, Thomas and Graham.

‘The backroom staff, the unsung heroes of Cobham, all of my team-mates over the years that have become my brothers, my family for the continuous love and support and most importantly you guys for sticking with me throughout. Wish you all the best’.

United had a number of bids turned down for Mount but finally managed to agree a fee.

The player was pictured in Manchester on Tuesday morning as he prepared to head back to United’s Carrington training ground to shoot his unveiling photos.

He was surrounded by several members of his entourage and a few security guards before adding the final touches to his transfer.

Mount’s Chelsea departure comes after he entered the final year of his contract this month. There were a series of fraught negotiations between the academy graduate and club chiefs, but ultimately he was unable to agree a new deal.

Mail Sport previously reported how a contract stand-off between Mount and Chelsea had plunged his future into doubt due to a significant gap in negotiations.

He is set to arrive at the perfect time for Erik Ten Hag and Co, who are due to begin their pre-season training in earnest with a friendly against rivals Leeds next week.
