Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker was able to put an earlier miss behind him to step up and nail the game-winning field goal in Super Bowl LVII.

The normally automatic kicker hit a 42-yard field goal off the left upright late in the first quarter – a kick which would have given them the lead.

But he was able to shake off the earlier miss to knock through a 27-yard chip shot field goal with seconds remaining to win the Chiefs their third Super Bowl.

‘That’s what you dream of as a kicker, getting to the Super Bowl and having a game-winning kick,’ Butker said.

‘It’s an amazing feeling, and I’m just so happy now to be with the Chiefs organization.’

Throughout the season, Butker had been dealing with a high ankle sprain that came back in Week 1. That injury came to his non-kicking leg, which serves as the plant leg that bears the kicker’s weight.

This sprain haunted Butker’s season – a frustrating one by his standards, with four extra point misses and seven field goal misses – including the one at the Super Bowl.

‘You’ve got to focus on the next kick, and that’s what I was doing,’ Butker said. ‘You do look at the scoreboard and think, “Wow, if I did make that field goal, we’d have three more points.”

‘But is that going to help me make the next kick? Probably not. You’ve got to get that out of your mind and just focus on the process and the next opportunity you get.’

Butker was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers, who signed him to a practice squad deal.

The Chiefs signed him off the Panthers’ reserve team after their kicker, Cairo Santos, was placed on injured reserve.

Since then, Butker has become a key cog in the Chiefs’ system – especially after a fantastic rookie season that saw him set team and league records.
