David Warner wins over the Barmy Army as he ‘channels his inner rock star’ with a dramatic move in front of the rowdiest stand at Edgbaston

  • Warner is playing last Ashes series in England
  • Clearly enjoying the banter with the crowd
  • Won over the Barmy Army with one bold move

David Warner is winning plenty of new admirers in his final Test matches in England during The Ashes series – including the Barmy Army.

The veteran opener was fielding on the boundary on day four of the first Ashes Test as the crowd in the the Eric Hollies Stand peppered Aussie fielders with chants, songs and sledges all Test and Warner was not exempted from their wrath.

However, Warner won the Barmy Army over by crossing the boundary rope with his hand held to his ear, signalling for the crowd to give him more.

He then stood with hands on hips, staring down the crowd and absorbing their best shots.

Warner’s stand was graciously received by the Barmy Army, who have been as vocal as ever during the gripping contest.

The Hollies Stand is named after the late Eric Hollies, a renowned leg-spinner who played for Warwickshire and England.

The stand is particularly significant because it is located at the end where Hollies famously bowled Don Bradman for a duck during the 1948 Ashes series, when the Australian legend only needed four runs to leave cricket with a Test average of 100.

During cricket Tests, the crowd in the stand is known for their passionate and boisterous support, creating an electric atmosphere with lively chants, songs, and enthusiastic cheering.

‘A number of the Aussie players were serenaded by the Hollies Stand but no surprises that David Warner got the loudest response,’ one fan posted on social media.

‘And he was the only one to then cross the rope, face the partisan crowd with hands on hip like he was asking them to give him their best.’

‘Just witnessed David Warner channelling his inner rockstar! Hands on hip, asking for the crowd’s best? He’s definitely mastered the art of ‘cricket and roll’,’ posted another.

‘Hollies stand are giving him a great farewell for his last test Innings for Australia and he does this,’ a third fan commented.

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli pulled off similar moves in the 2021/22 series against England

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli pulled off similar moves in the 2021/22 series against England

It is not the first time a cricket superstar has stood up to the Barmy Army, with former Indian captain Virat Kohli taunting the English crowd on multiple occasions.

One of the most memorable was when he held his hand to his ear in the fourth Test of the 2021/22 series with England in deep trouble and the crowd hushed.

India famously won that contest after rallying from being bowled out for just 191 in the first innings to winning by 157 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

‘I’m really proud of the character the team has shown, specially this morning the way the team has bowled,’ Kohli said at the time.

‘It is definitely among top three bowling performances that I have witnessed as Indian captain.’

Australia need 174 runs and England seven wickets to secure a famous Ashes victory after Stuart Broad’s heroics ensured the enthralling series opener enters day five with everything to play for.

Set 281 to win, Australia slumped from 0-61 to 3-107 at stumps, after Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith all fell in the space of eight dramatic overs late on Monday.
