Didi Hamann tells Germany to ‘act now’ and SACK Hansi Flick after poor run of results – as he claims the under-fire boss has ‘lost the trust of the players’

  • Dietmar Hamann has called on Hansi Flick to be sacked from his Germany post
  • Flick is under increasing scrutiny following a dreadful run of recent results
  • Germany’s defeat to Colombia on Tuesday has seen pressure mount on Flick

The Germany national team must ‘act now’ and release Hansi Flick from his head coach role following a disappointing run of results, according to Didi Hamann.

Flick is under intense scrutiny following Tuesday’s shock 2-0 friendly defeat against Colombia in Gelsenkirchen that caps a dreadful period for the nation who have won just one of their last five matches.

The 58-year-old moved into the role in 2021 following a Treble-winning season with Bayern Munich and started life in the national team set-up with eight consecutive victories as Germany qualified for the Qatar World Cup.

He remained unbeaten for five further games before falling to a one-goal Nations League defeat against Hungary in September of last year and has struggled to rediscover previous form.

Germany failed to progress past the group stage at the World Cup and since then have won just once, a narrow victory over Peru in a friendly. Now, Hamann like others want Flick to be cut from his position.

‘The danger that this will go wrong with him is so great that you have to act now,’ he told Sky Germany.

‘It’s going in the wrong direction at a huge pace. [He has] lost the trust of the players.

‘If it’s right in the team, then the boys do it themselves, because they say: We’ll go through fire for him. That’s not the case at the moment,’ he added.

Flick has won 12 of the 24 matches he has manned the national team dugout at Germany and is set to remain in charge of the team until the completion of the 2024 European Championship.

However, recent tactical experiments including the testing of a three-man defence has failed to produce the desired impact and there are now calls for Flick to be replaced.

On Wednesday, German outlet BILD sent out an SOS message calling for Jurgen Klopp to leave Liverpool and take up the reigns of the national team.

Meanwhile, Hamann has earmarked Carlo Ancelotti or Zinedine Zidane for the role, but would also welcome Julian Nagelsmann stating: ‘We’ve been muddling around for years and think we’re the best and greatest. But the fact is that we’ve fallen so far behind.

‘It can’t get any worse than it is at the moment, which is why I would also greet Julian Nagelsmann with a kiss on the hand,’ he added.
