Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Dusan Vlahovic after reports in Italy suggested that the Fiorentina star is seeking a more ‘ambitious’ project than what the Gunners are offering.

Mikel Arteta is desperate for a new striker to lead the line at the Emirates, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang exiled from the first team while Alexandre Lacazette’s contract expires at the end of the season.

Youngster Eddie Nketiah is also set to leave for free and has garnered interest from Bayer Leverkusen, Brighton, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Earlier this week, reports claimed that the Gunners had tabled a player-plus-cash package for the Serbian, comprising £46million plus Lucas Torreira, who is on loan at Fiorentina this season.

However, journalist Gianluca di Marzio reports that Vlahovic’s representatives are attempting to ‘cool’ Arsenal’s interest in the 21-year-old, with the striker holding out for a project with more ambition.

In fact, it is suggested that calls from Arsenal were not returned when they initially enquired about Vlahovic months ago.

Arsenal have registered a stronger interest in the Serb than any other club, with Tottenham, Manchester United and Juventus linked with Vlahovic, who has scored 18 goals in 22 games this season.

The striker remained coy over his future when quizzed this week, saying: ‘Only God knows what will happen next’.

He said:  ‘I’ve said it several times so far. There is a good football story being made here in Florence. We have a good team, great players, great support from the fans. Everything deserves respect.

‘Only God knows what will happen in the next period. My desire is to take Fiorentina to Europe, because we haven’t been in Europe for a long time. We’ll see.’
