Dwyane Wade has become the latest ex-athlete to invest in the WNBA, with the Chicago Sky announcing Friday that he would join the team’s ownership group.

Wade’s investment, which is subject to approval from the WNBA board of governors, follows Tom Brady foray into women’s basketball in March, when he bought a piece of the Las Vegas Aces.

Former Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez owns 40 percent of the Minnesota Lynx (and NBA counterpart Timberwolves) alongside business partner Marc Lasry, while Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson has been an owner of the LA Sparks since 2014.

‘We all talk about support, and support looks different for everyone,’ Wade told ESPN

‘And so instead of tweeting out and saying ‘go support the W,’ instead of showing up at the game and supporting, I wanted to take it to that next level, and this was the next level for me.

‘It’s a great opportunity to be a part of the league in its very early stages. … Growth is going to happen, and so I want to be a part of the growth of this league.’

Since calling time on his legendary NBA career in 2019, Wade has also become an owner of the Utah Jazz and MLS’ Real Salt Lake.

It’s not clear what level of investment Wade is providing to the Sky, but Michael Alter will remain the team’s controlling owner.

Wade is a Chicago native and played one season for the Chicago Bulls in the 2016-17 season.

The Sky won their first WNBA championship in 2021, but now find themselves struggling with an 8-12 record this season.

The league, however, is in a healthier place.

Brittney Griner’s return to the league earlier this season drew 683,000 viewers – the largest cable audience in 24 years.

Griner was recently named an All-Star for the ninth time in her career.
