England DENIED £12,500 match fees from nine-wicket collapse at the Gabba for slow over rates against Australia… with Joe Root’s men caught five overs behind in Ashes opener

Insult was added to injury for England yesterday after the XI thrashed by Australia at the Gabba were fined their entire £12,500 match fees for slow over rates.

Joe Root’s team were also docked an unprecedented five points in the World Test Championship after being found to be five overs behind when all allowances were taken into consideration.

Match referee David Boon meted the punishment using the guidance on minimum over rate offences under which players are fined 20% of their appearance fees for every over they are judged to be in arrears.

England’s entire squad were denied their appearance fee for the Ashes first Test Down Under

The visitors were five overs behind and were also docked five World Test ranking points

Teams are also penalised one point in the WTC for each of those overs.

England only managed 84 of the 98 overs they were required to bowl on an extended second day in Brisbane, an equivalent of 12 overs per hour.

Australia know only too well how costly such indiscretions can be, having narrowly missed out on a place in the inaugural WTC final by virtue of being behind earlier this year.
