‘Eric Dier take a bow… that is one of the worst own goals I have ever seen’: Football fans go wild on social media after Spurs defender’s comedy error against Newcastle – as one insists it will be seen on ‘many a bloopers programme’ in years to come
- Eric Dier was guilty of an own goal in the 89th minute against Newcastle
- His blushes were spared as Tottenham still managed a 3-2 win at St James’ Park
- The Spurs defender was jointly awarded Man of the Match with Sergio Reguilon
- The Tottenham duo were key in alerting the referee to a medical emergency
Eric Dier may have been jointly awarded Man of the Match alongside team-mate Sergio Reguilon but it certainly was not for his quality of football.
After 89 minutes, Tottenham looked to have the win secured with a comfortable 3-1 lead and Newcastle down to 10 men but the hosts managed to reduce the deficit thanks to Dier.
The England international was guilty of a horrendous own goal. As Jacob Murphy’s free-kick from the right dipped awkwardly in front of him, he ducked towards the ball, missed an attempted header and kneed the ball emphatically into the far corner.
Luckily for Dier, his comical attempt at a header didn’t cost Spurs as they left St James’ Park with three points in the bag and a spot in fifth ahead of Manchester United.

While some were shocked over the horrendous error others were less surprised.
Some football fans found Dier’s own goal to be well within character for the defender and didn’t attempt to hide their lack of surprise.
One claimed that the 27-year-old had ‘summed up his whole career’, while another said his kneed strike was the ‘most Eric Dier own goal’.
Other fans were not surprised by the defender’s error, claiming it was the ‘most Dier thing’
In the first half, play was temporarily suspended due to a medical emergency in the stands.
Both Reguilon and Dier were key in alerting the match officials with the latter sprinting across to the Newcastle dug-out miming the exigent need for a defibrillator, earning them joint Man of the Match.
