UFC flyweight Montana De La Rosa has called for changes to the women’s uniforms in the organisation following a wardrobe mishap in her most recent bout against Tatiana Suarez.

De La Rosa came up short in her return to the sport last weekend at UFC Vegas 70, finishing up losing by submission in the second round to Suarez.

However, the 28-year-old experienced her top almost exposing her breast during a takedown, and took to Instagram after the event to complain about the issue.

‘This is definitely a wardrobe issue,’ she wrote on Instagram. ‘Hopefully, UFC and Venum Women / Venum will fix this.’

This comes just a week after UFC star Jessica Andrade blamed her loss to Erin Blanchfield in Las Vegas on a similar problem.

Andrade suffered a second round submission defeat via rear naked choke, but says that she ‘lost focus’ because her breast ‘slipped out’ while Blanchfield attempted a takedown.

‘This is not an excuse, but when she came for the takedown, I lost focus,’ Andrade said.

‘Because when she moved in, she put her shoulder just under my top and my breast completely slipped out. I lost focus and forgot to counter.

‘All I could think of was my breast. When I used my hand to put my breast back in the top, that’s when she was able to take me down. It’s all part of the game, though. It’s not an excuse. She really had a great game plan.

‘It wasn’t on purpose. We have to be ready for everything. I should’ve been prepared to let my breast be out if it slipped out. It has been shown in so many places before. I shouldn’t even be worried about that.’

Fight fans echoed De La Rosa’s call for better designed tops for female athletes competing.

‘In all seriousness, they need a better design. I see how this could affected Montana’s defense/decision making,’ wrote one Twitter user.

‘Was def thinking while watching in real time she had a severely underperforming sports bra/top. Women shouldn’t have to worry about their breasts being exposed while fighting. I get t-shirts are available, but ALL UFC gear should offer performance worthy of pro athlete use,’ said another.

Venum replaced Reebok as the official apparel partner of the UFC in 2021, and until recently have not had many complaints about the construction of their outfits.

Women competing in the UFC have the option of wearing a full rash guard or a sports bra style of top.

As yet, Venum and the UFC haven’t commented on complaints from Andrade and De La Rosa about improving their apparel.
