German media claim their national team are the ‘OUTSIDERS’ to win the women’s Euro 2022 final – despite a record eight trophies! – as they downplay their chances against the roaring Lionesses who have ‘played themselves into a frenzy’

  • Germany are the most successful side in the history of the women’s Euros
  • They won the tournament six times in a row between 1995 and 2013
  • England have outscored them dramatically so far with 20 goals in five games
  • The Lionesses have beaten Germany just twice in 27 meetings to date

Germany will be the ‘outsiders’ in the Sunday’s Euro 2022 final against England, according to German newspaper Bild.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side are the most successful side in the history of the women’s Euros with eight wins, including six in a row between 1995 and 2013. No other nation has won the tournament more than once.

England meanwhile have made two finals and lost both to Germany, most recently in the 2009 Euros in Finland.

Despite the historical disparity, Bild still points to England’s home advantage and superior goal scoring in the tournament so far (the Lionesses have scored 20 compared to their opponents 13) as reasons to see the German side as underdogs.

They also wrote than England have ‘played themselves into a frenzy’, and claimed that of the 90,000 fans in Wembley for Sunday’s final, only ‘3,000 will be from Germany.’

It is a unique position for the side, and one that sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou thinks could give them an advantage. He told Bild: ‘We have nothing to lose. That is definitely the harder game for the English women.’

Germany coach Voss-Tecklenburg added: ‘What England showed at this tournament is of course brutally good.

‘They are full of dynamism, have scored many, many goals. They ooze self-confidence. But the first 30 minutes against Sweden showed that you can hurt them.’

England did struggle in a frantic opening half-hour in their semi-final against Sweden, but settled into the game to win emphatically 4-0.

They have trailed just once in the entire tournament, against Spain in the quarter final, and recently scored their 100th goals under manager Sarina Wiegman after just 18 games.

A bigger worry will be the Lionesses historic record against Germany: They have won twice in 27 meetings.

One of those wins did come earlier this year, when England won 3-1 to secure the Arnold Clark Cup, but it will still be a daunting game against a side that beat the Lionesses in a Euros final as recently as 2009.
