Inter Miami are set to miss out on signing Luis Suarez – for the time being, at least – with the legendary striker set to stay at Brazilian team Gremio for the rest of the year.

Suarez, a former teammate of Lionel Messi at Barcelona, has been strongly linked with joining him at the Major League Soccer team recently.

But now, according to ESPN, Suarez is staying at Gremio where he has a contract running through to December 2024.

Speaking earlier this week, the Miami coach Tata Martino cooled talk on Suarez joining the team.

‘After all is said and done there are some obstacles with regard to his situation with Gremio and this means that it is not all Inter Miami’s decision,’ Martino said.

Messi and Suarez played together at Barcelona and at one point formed a stunning three-man attack with Neymar.

They won the Champions League together in 2015 and also won four LaLiga titles in Spain as part of the same team.

But if they are to join forces again, it appears they are going to have to wait.

Miami have vowed to bring in high quality players to line up with Messi in Major League Soccer and have already signed Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba – two former teammates from Barcelona.

Like Messi, Busquets has made two appearances already for Miami while Alba is hoping to join up with the Miami team by the end of the week.

Messi, meanwhile, has needed little time to adjust to life in Major League Soccer and has scored three goals in two Leagues Cup games with Miami.

The team’s two wins – against Cruz Azul and Atlanta United – mean the next game will come on August 2 in a last-32 knockout tie.
