Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have refused to rule Liverpool out of finishing in the top four after the Reds’ win over Everton.

Liverpool beat their neighbours 2-0 on Monday night to climb above Chelsea into ninth in the league table.

They have had a poor season so far and are nine points off Newcastle in fourth with a game in hand, but looked somewhere close to their usual selves on Monday at Anfield.

The Sky pundits praised Jurgen Klopp’s side for their performance before speaking on their top four chances, with Carragher insisting his former side can put up a fight to reach the Champions League.

He said: ‘Klopp has just got to hope Liverpool can now go on and try to make some sort of fight for that top four position. Could they have a Champions League run? Sometimes one big result in a big game can spark something.

‘Liverpool have certainly looked like their old selves for a lot of this game.

‘I still think it’s a big outside chance for them to make top four. Liverpool’s next game away at Newcastle is vital. If they get three points in that game then I think they are back in the equation. There’s still so long in the season to go.’

Neville echoed his colleague’s views, pointing out the fact that key players have been missing through injury.

He said: ‘They have missed players, you put Van Dijk, Jota back in that side and it doesn’t look like its out of the picture.

‘If they beat Newcastle on Saturday they’ll be very difficult to stop. There’s been a lot of talk about how Henderson didn’t come out of the World Cup very well, but these players have built up so much credibility, they will come again this season and they will go on a run if they can get the players in the team.

‘They’re not going to accept finishing 10th, they’ll fight for every single point, and they can go on a big run.’

Forward Mo Salah was on the scoresheet, with Cody Gakpo netting his first goal, while Darwin Nunez received a warm reception from the Liverpool fans
