Jurgen Klopp seemed to think that Mohamed Salah had pulled Liverpool level against Arsenal before belatedly discovering that wasn’t the case. However, Liverpool eventually equalised through Roberto Firmino.

The hosts won a penalty at the start of the second-half after Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale brought down Liverpool forward Diogo Jota as he came to try and claim a corner.

Salah was handed the ball and the responsibility to try and equalise from the penalty spot after his initial 42nd minute finish had reduced the deficit, but moments later had his head in his hands.

The Egyptian put his penalty wide, hitting the post as he tried to find the bottom corner, but Klopp didn’t appear to realise and video footage shows that he thought his team had scored.

Klopp couldn’t bear to watch Salah – who previously missed a penalty against Bournemouth – placed the ball down and smashed his effort off-target.

The German instead stood with his arms crossed and upon hearing the Anfield crowd pumped his fist in celebration after thinking that Liverpool had pegged Arsenal back.

However, the 55-year-old then quickly realised his mistake as he looked to the pitch expecting to see his players celebrating in front of the Kop but instead saw Salah with his shirt pulled over his head as he looked to hide from the baying crowd.

An exasperated Klopp then held his hands out as he questioned what had gone wrong and looked for answers to see how Salah had failed to score.

The noise that he thought was confirmation that his side had scored was instead Arsenal supporters celebrating the winger’s miss.

Liverpool eventually equalised late on as Roberto Firmino’s header beat Ramsdale from close-range in the fiery Premier League encounter.

Klopp and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had to be spoken to at various times by match officials for their heated moments in the dugout as both sets of players failed to control their discipline at times.

Tempers seemed to boil over as Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson claimed that he was elbowed by linesman Constantine Hatzidakis.
