Jurgen Klopp insists Brentford deserved to take a point off his Liverpool side in ‘wild ride’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted that Brentford deserved to take a point from proceedings following an enthralling 3-3 draw. 

Klopp stressed that Liverpool found it difficult to cope with Brentford’s long balls. 

The Reds were held for the second time this season, with substitute Yoane Wissa scoring a late equaliser for Brentford.

Ethan Pinnock put Brentford ahead in the 27th minute only for Diogo Jota to level for Liverpool four minutes later.

Mohamed Salah put Liverpool 2-1 up with his 100th Premier League goal for the club but Brentford responded through Vitaly Janelt.

A long range effort from Curtis Jones put Liverpool in front prior to Wissa’s intervention.  

Klopp was asked on Sky Sports whether he enjoyed the game.

He said: ‘Not sure that enjoy is the right word but it was a wild ride. They deserved their three goals for the way they played. 

‘We couldn’t deal with the long balls for different reasons; we should have scored more goals, we had incredible chances. They deserved it, we played offensively and with the ball, I don’t think we could have controlled them much better.’

Klopp added that Liverpool found it difficult to cope with the long balls that Brentford played

Klopp acknowledged that Liverpool struggled to restrict Brentford’s attacking threat. 

Klopp said: ‘We couldn’t deal with them defensively. These things happen, it was brilliant play, the pass from Robbo to Diogo to Sadio then Mo, it was brilliant football. Mo normally scores in these situations but today not. I liked how we played up front together we should have scored more. If we won 3-2 or 4-3 we still have struggles defensively, they did really well.

‘It was tricky for the boys. We can do better in these situations, we just didn’t today and it’s not satisfying. Spectacular game and Brentford deserved the point. That is how it is, I have no problem with accepting that. When you play this kind of football, top ball from Sadio, that’s football. We would have deserved to win today because we had much more chances than Brentford. In the end, there were situations we could have done better.’

The Liverpool boss added that Salah should have scored another, with his effort ending up on the roof of the net. 

‘Mo sees it the same way, he would love to have 101 today. So many good moments football wise so it makes it strange to analyse. The way they defend is not easy to play but we have to defend the first and second balls better. We couldn’t sort it today. We saw it, we told the boys at half time and we controlled it better but in these situations they were all dangerous.’ 

Klopp was pleased with the performance of Jones, with the young midfielder acquitting himself well.

He said: ‘He played a good game, connected brilliantly in general and this screamer as well. That’s good. The goals we scored, what a pass from Fabinho, fantastic cross from Hendo for Diogo but we have to accept that. Brentford showed an incredible performance but for us today it was too tricky defensively.’ 

Despite dropping points, Liverpool remain top of the Premier League – they have taken 14 points from six games.

Brentford, meanwhile, are in ninth place with nine points.
