Mail Sport has learned that Carsley has held talks over his future with FA technical director John McDermott during the tournament in Georgia and will be formally offered a new contract by chief executive Mark Bullingham later this month.

Carsley is currently on a 12 month rolling deal with a break clause this summer and the FA want to tie him down for longer, particularly after the outstanding job he has done over the last month in guiding the under 21’s to their first major final for 14 years.

Mail Sport revealed last month that Carsley is on the FA of Ireland’s shortlist to replace Stephen Kenny as Republic of Ireland manager however, while the former Everton midfield player also has aspirations to manage at club level.

Carsley has worked for the FA since being appointed under 20 coach three years ago before replacing Aidy Boothroyd as under 21 manager 12 months later and is highly regarded at Wembley.

With Gareth Southgate’s contract expiring in 18 months the 49-year-old could even emerge as a candidate to replace the England manager if he chooses to stay on, if he chooses to stay on, as the FA’s preference is for a home-grown manager.

Carsley has a close relationship with Southgate, who watched several of England’s group games in Georgia and is due to fly out to attend tomorrow’s final against Spain.
