His voice is synonymous with rugby league, but Ray ‘Rabbits’ Warren won’t be behind the microphone for State of Origin next week after announcing his retirement from commentating.
Warren has been calling for over 55 years, and will finish on 99 State of Origin games after an illustrious career, with colleagues taking to social media to declare ‘Rabs’ as the greatest commentator the game had ever seen.
There had been mounting speculation in the lead-up to Origin as to whether the 78-year-old would raise the bat for a century of Origin matches, but the veteran caller decided to pull the pin before his performance deteriorated.
He wanted to go out on top.
‘I had nothing to prove. After calling rugby league and other sports for 55 years including 99 Origins, I have decided my time in the commentary box is over,’ Warren told the Sydney Morning Herald.
‘Obviously it’s a sad time however I will still be employed by Nine doing whatever is required of me.’
