Leyton Orient 2-0 Crewe: Richie Wellens’ side clinch League Two title with THREE games spare

Leyton Orient clinched the League Two title on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Crewe Alexandra 2-0 at Brisbane Road to end a 53-year wait for a major trophy. 

The win put Richie Wellens’ side seven points clear at the top of the League Two standings, with chasers, Northampton Town and Stevenage, now mathematically unable to catch them. 

It’s been an impressive campaign for Orient, who have lost just six matches this season and they continued their fine run of form to defeat Crewe in front of 8,311 home fans, thanks to a pair of second-half goals that earned the club their first title in the English Football League since they won the old third division in 1970.

Orient had already secured promotion after they defeated Gillingham last week, also ending an eight-year absence from League One.

But it was a cagey first-half on Saturday, with the London side having to wait until the 51st minute for a breakthrough, despite Paul Smyth and George Moncur testing David Richards in the Crewe net.

There were scenes of jubilation at Brisbane Road at full-time with fans invading the pitch

Crewe forward Chris Long had the chance of the half, and could have stalled Orient’s party, had he not hit his shot over the crossbar after beating Orient’s offside trap.

The home team would eventually find the back of the net, after Daniel Agyei obstructed Darren Pratley inside the box, with the referee awarding a penalty for the foul. 

Moncur stepped up and made no mistake in converting the penalty to secure his ninth goal of the season, his fifth from the spot, sending the home fans into jubilation.

The home side followed up with a second 20 minutes later, with Charlie Kelman capitalising on a very poor piece of miscommunication between defender Luke Offord and goalkeeper Richards. 

That allowed the Orient forward to break through unopposed on goal and slide the ball into the back of an empty net, securing the win for the home side. 

The result is the clubs 25th win of the season and fans flocked onto the pitch after the match to celebrate winning the title and securing promotion to League One.

After the crowds had been cleared the players joined in on the celebrations, spraying champagne and dancing with the supporters as they took a lap of honour around the field.
