Manchester United fans were left baffled by David de Gea after the goalkeeper was seen reading a set of notes before their penalty shootout win over Brighton – but still failed to make a single save.

The Red Devils were made to work for their spot in the FA Cup final against the Seagulls as both sides could not be separated after 120 minutes, with Roberto de Zerbi’s men missing a host of chances to score at Wembley.

And at the end of regulation time it was a chance for De Gea to step up and be a hero – with the 32-year-old studying what looked like a cheat sheet on the floor shortly before stepping between the posts for the tense shootout, which United would go on to win 7-6.

That was lucky for De Gea after his research failed to pay off as he was sent the wrong way with every effort – with Solly March’s final spot kick being blasted over the bar to send them to the final against rivals Man City

While relieved to see the team get over the line, United fans were still left stumped after the shootout win that De Gea’s notes didn’t manage to have any impact at all.

One fan joked: ‘De Gea had an open book test and still failed the test. He didn’t save even one penalty after all the notes he was given.

Another wrote: ‘Does De Gea just dive the opposite way after reading all of his notes or what? Maybe he doesn’t know his left and right?’

‘How’s De Gea reading the notes on his bottle but still not save a penalty,’ another supporter questioned.

And one simply was forced to see the funny side, writing: ‘De Gea going the wrong way every time immediately after checking notes is cracking me up.’

United fans have been frustrated with De Gea’s ability at saving penalties in the past, having also failed to make a single save as they were beaten in the 2021 Europa League final against Villarreal in a shootout.

De Gea also had a cheat sheet at the time, yet failed to go the way he was instructed to in the crucial kicks on a handful of occasions as the LaLiga side won 11-10.
