None of Manchester United‘s Premier League rivals would have Fred or Scott McTominay in their midfield, former Liverpool right back Steve Nicol has claimed.

The pair have been key figures in the Red Devils midfield in recent seasons as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer favoured the pair and they’ve continued to feature under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

United have not kicked on since Rangnick replaced Solskjaer at the helm and have come under scrutiny after a narrow win over basement boys Norwich was followed by a disappointing draw at relegation-threatened Newcastle this week.

United had to call on Edinson Cavani off the bench at St James’ Park to rescue a point despite the wealth of attacking talent within the ranks.

Former Liverpool defender Nicol has suggested that the star-studded attack, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, is struggling due to supply problems in behind them.

‘Look at the middle of the park, who’s going to have Fred and McTominay in their team? Of the good sides, none of them,’ he told ESPN FC.

‘So, you look at the front four and you think “why are these guys not producing?”

‘Well, are they getting enough of the ball? Well, if you can’t get enough of the ball against Newcastle, who quite frankly look as though they’re going to go down in my opinion, then what chance have you got?

‘So you could have anybody you want up front that you could pick, if you can’t get them the ball you’re not going to score goals.’

Ex-United defender Gary Neville branded United players a ‘bunch of whingebags’ as he let rip into them after their ‘shocking’ first-half performance on Monday night.

Rangnick’s side are seven points off fourth-placed Arsenal and will be looking to return to winning ways when they welcome Burnley to Old Trafford tonight.
