Manchester United have announced plans to play a friendly against LaLiga side Cadiz as part of a week-long training camp during the World Cup.

A United side featuring players not involved in the tournament will take on the Spanish outfit on December 7. United said the game would be the first of two friendly matches held while the winter World Cup is taking place in Qatar.

While many of United’s first-team squad will be at the World Cup, the match will give Ten Hag the chance to give his players a runout ahead of the resumption of the Premier League season on Boxing Day.

United’s final game prior to the six-week shutdown is away to Fulham on November 13, before they get back underway against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on December 27.

Erik ten Hag’s men could have a Carabao Cup game in the week before Christmas should they beat Aston Villa in the third round on November 10.

David de Gea, Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay are among the players who could feature in the Cadiz friendly.

De Gea has not even made Spain’s preliminary 55-man World Cup squad, while Lindelof and McTominay’s countries – Sweden and Scotland, respectively – have not qualified.

Jadon Sancho may also travel to Spain for the training camp as his chances of being selected for England by Gareth Southgate appear slim at this stage.

Sancho has struggled for form this season and was an unused substitute in the 1-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday.

French centre-back Raphael Varane is facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after suffering an injury in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea last Saturday.

Varane, who was visibly distraught as he left the pitch at Stamford Bridge, will not play for United again until the World Cup as a result of the injury.

It is possible the 29-year-old could remain with United instead of going to Qatar if the problem does not heal in time.

‘Erik and the team have made good progress during this first half of the season, and it is important we maintain this momentum coming out of the World Cup break,’ United football director John Murtough said.

‘A winter training camp will be a vital part of the team’s preparations for the second half of the season.

‘We have lined up a high-quality local opponent to play against, ensuring match fitness and sharpness is retained. The camp and game will also allow for some of our young talent to experience training and playing in a first-team environment, as well as provide entertaining club football for fans.’

Other Premier League clubs are also set to embark on training camps abroad during the World Cup, which kicks off on November 20.

Newcastle will travel to Saudi Arabia, while Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has said he will take his team ‘to a place where the temperature is good’.
