Martial and Sancho have taken their chance on Man United’s pre-season tour

Manchester United have enjoyed an impressive pre-season so far under new boss Erik ten Hag, with an almost perfect record.

The Red Devils beat Liverpool 4-0, Melbourne Victory 4-1 and Crystal Palace 3-1 before drawing 2-2 with Aston Villa on their 18-day tour of Thailand and Australia in preparation for the new Premier League season.

United still have two more friendlies against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano before the new campaign.

New boss ten Hag has implemented his new methods since arriving at Old Trafford and some have impressed while other have perhaps fallen down the pecking order, but it has been overshadowed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence and attempts to leave.

Sportsmail takes a look at the winners and losers from the pre-season tour, as the Dutchman prepares for life in the Premier League.

David De Gea (Goalkeeper)

The Spaniard was below-par for his standard on the tour, but conceded very few goals, and is bound to be the number one with his main competition Dean Henderson heading out on loan to Nottingham Forest.

The 31-year-old’s ability to play out with his feet has been questioned and the boss even shouted out ‘David, what the f**k are you doing?!’ during the pre-season clash against Palace when the goalkeeper kicked the ball long with just minutes left.

VERDICT – JURY’S OUT

Tom Heaton (Goalkeeper)

The 36-year-old is arguably a winner as he is now De Gea’s main rival for the number one spot, playing twice during the tour, despite only starting once.

The former Burnley shot-stopper has only played 22 minutes competitively since arriving at Old Trafford, but has more scope to play more this campaign.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Victor Lindelof (Defender) 

The Sweden international has had plenty of opportunity to shine, playing four times while on tour, but instead it has backfired with him looking slow and struggling to deal with any attackers with pace.

Eric Bailly impressed on the tour, with new signing Lisandro Martinez expected to a key figure alongside Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire, he could be well out of the question in terms of the first-team this season. 

VERDICT – LOSER 

Eric Bailly (Defender)

The Ivory Coast defender put in a number of impressive performances on the tour, most notably in the 4-0 win over Liverpool where he made a number of vital blocks.

Bailly also managed to help set up two of the 11 goals United have scored in their three friendlies

VERDICT – WINNER 

Harry Maguire (Defender)

Maguire had a fairly solid pre-season tour, playing three times, and has given himself a good chance of remaining a starter when the new season kicks off.

The captain has been warned, however, that he has to perform to keep his place and questioned have been raised whether he can deal with the full-backs being encouraged to attack by boss ten Hag.

VERDICT – JURY’S OUT

Raphael Varane (Defender)

The Frenchman has struggled to stay fit since joining United and he saw very little game time on the tour.

The former Real Madrid star featured twice, but a huge question mark remains over whether he can get fit and stay fit, and be the influential figure they expected when they signed him last summer.

VERDICT – JURY’S OUT

Phil Jones (Defender) 

The 27-cap England defender Jones looks to be heading for the exit door this summer, if United can find a suitor, especially given the fact that he didn’t feature at all while on tour. 

The 30-year-old has a year left on his contract but after ten years at the club he has been made available for transfer

VERDICT – LOSER 

Axel Tuanzebe (Defender)

Tuanzebe, who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, is a strange one as he had to leave the tour due to personal reasons.

Sadly, that will not help his case as the former United young player of the season is already down the pecking order and reportedly available this summer. Not featuring means he hasn’t given the boss anything to think about. 

VERDICT – LOSER 

Will Fish (Defender) 

Will Fish was originally left out of the initial tour squad but was flown out by Ten Hag as another option at centre-half after Axel Tuanzebe had to drop out. 

Fish only featured in the game against Crystal Palace and picked up a red card for a professional foul.

VERDICT – LOSER 

Diogo Dalot (Right-back)

Dalot was one of the biggest winners on the pre-season tour, as it now looks as though he is classed as the first-choice right-back under Erik ten Hag.

He started all four of their matches on tour and set up Anthony Martial for the Frenchman’s opening goal against Palace in Melbourne and he could also benefit from the manager’s desire for his full-backs to get forward.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Right-back) 

Wan-Bissaka played just 92 minutes on United’s tour and did not get on the field in the 4-1 win over Melbourne Victory, with Ten Hag instead giving Ethan Laird a run-out once Dalot made way.

The £50million United paid for Crystal Palace is looking like a poor piece of business and they are said to be listening to offers this summer. 

VERDICT – LOSER 

Ethan Laird (Right-back)

The youngster came off the bench in two matches and played a total of 58 minutes, given the amount of defensive options, that’s not the worse outcome.

The fact that Aaron Win-Bissaka didn’t start a match either when on tour, could see him classed as a second choice right-back, although third behind the former Palace man still seems more likely.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Luke Shaw (Left-back)

Shaw looks to have retained his position at left-back, despite the arrival of Tyrell Malacia, and competition from Alex Telles and Brandon Williams.

The England international started three times and looked to be getting back to his best form with some impressive displays.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Tyrell Malacia (Left-back)

The only new signing on the pre-season tour and the 22-year-old showed why Ten Hag chose to bring him in from Feyenoord.

The Dutchman looks as though he will provide healthy competition for Shaw and looked extremely positive when going forward. 

VERDICT – WINNER 

Alex Telles (Left-back)

The Brazilian was not used in his natural position and instead played as a left-sided centre-half when used by Ten Hag. 

Unsurprisingly, he didn’t look secure and may take his make-do inclusion as an indication of his manager’s preferences at left-back, despite coming off the bench on four occasions.

VERDICT – LOSER 

Brandon Williams (Left-back)

The youngster didn’t feature at all and could be set to leave this summer after being pushed down to the fourth choice left-back.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Norwich City and is now being linked with a permanent move to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion. 

VERDICT – LOSER 

Fred (Midfielder)

Fred started all four of the matches on the tour and even scored a stunning goal against Liverpool.

The Brazilian has come under criticism during his time at United but his pre-season form showed he could be a big part of ten Hag’s plans.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Scott McTominay (Midfielder)

The Scotland international saw his tour hampered by injuries, although he still featured three times.

He sparked the comeback against Melbourne Victory with his deflected shot and was solid in United’s midfield. Questions remain on his technical ability.

VERDICT –  JURY’S OUT

Donny Van de Beek (Midfielder)

It was his chance to shine, working under Erik ten Hag once again, who made him a star at Ajax and most expected a rejuvenation.

That wasn’t to be the case and instead it was an average with only one start, despite playing on three occasions. 

VERDICT -LOSER

Bruno Fernandes (Midfielder)

Fernandes is clearly going to be a big part of United’s attack, as he was back in his trademark No 10 position, and looked back to his best.

The Portuguese star shone on the tour and perhaps will need to remain in that kind of form to keep ahead of competition from new signing Christian Eriksen.

VERDICT – WINNER

James Garner (Midfielder)

Garner has potentially put himself in contention to be a useful squad member this campaign.

He impressed on loan as he helped Nottingham Forest gain promotion to the Premier League and in the final game of the tour against Aston Villa he made a positive cameo as a substitute and showed his capabilities.

VERDICT – WINNER

Hannibal Mejbri (Midfielder)

He made two substitute appearances on the tour after catching the eye of the boss in training and much like Garner could see himself be used as a squad member this season.

The 19-year-old showed off his ability and intensity in his cameo appearances off the bench for United.

VERDICT – WINNER

Zidane Iqbal (Midfielder)

The 19-year-old was the surprise star of the tour with an excellent showing in their 4-0 win over Liverpool.

He impressed and ended up featuring in all four matches and has arguably given the boss something to think about ahead of the season.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Charlie Savage (Midfielder)

Sticking with the theme, another youngster that impressed on the tour, and showed off his impressive passing range and ability to play as a deep-lying midfielder.

Savage much like a few of the other youngsters could become a useful squad member or even benefit from a loan spell to continue his development. 

VERDICT – WINNER 

Marcus Rashford (Forward)

Scored two goals in four games on the tour and showed glimpses of the star that we all know he is.

Rashford struggled last season and looked lost, but he struck up a good partnership with both Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho, as they played in a front three during the friendlies.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Anthony Martial (Forward)

The Frenchman has perhaps been the main beneficiary from the situation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo, with the forward being given the chance to lead the line on tour.

Martial, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla and looked set to leave, has revived his United career by notching three goals on the tour. 

VERDICT – WINNER

Jadon Sancho (Forward)

The £73million attacker was a huge let down after his big-money move from Borussia Dortmund last summer, he even missed out on the last few England squads.

Ten Hag’s system seems to fit the wide forward and his pre-season showed exactly that as he linked up well with Martial and Rashford. A good season is needed if United are to be successful.

VERDICT – WINNER 

Cristiano Ronaldo (Forward)

The superstar has been absent throughout the entire 18-day tour and that has overshadowed United’s plans for next season.

The 37-year-old is reportedly attempting to leave United in order to play Champions League football next season. 

VERDICT – LOSER   

Anthony Elanga

Elanga became a favourite at the end of last season and suffered on the tour due to the good form of the front three. Meaning a lack of game time.

The Sweden international started just once, but did feature in all four matches, although he failed to make a real impact.    

VERDICT – LOSER 

Tahith Chong (Forward)

A surprise inclusion in the tour squad. He featured for 68 minutes in total, twice off the bench, and showed he can be a useful impact.

A good use of pace to set up one of the goals against Melbourne Victory.

VERDICT – JURY’S OUT 

Facundo Pellistri (Forward)

Pellistri scored in United’s opener against Liverpool but apart from this did not make too much of an impact on the tour.

The 20-year-old needs a loan spell to continue his development rather than sitting on the sidelines.

VERDICT -JURY’S OUT

Amad Diallo (Forward)

The youngster looked comfortable on the ball, but much like Pellistri could do with a loan move to gain more experience and regular game time.

He did, however, combine well with Pellistri for the fourth goal against Liverpool on the tour.
