NRL great Martin Lang slams ‘pathetic’ Gold Coast Titans for playing Cyndi Lauper’s hit Girls Just Want To Have Fun whenever Cowboys scored during 32-6 thrashing

  • The Titans suffered another loss on Thursday, this time against the Cowboys
  • There were plenty of Cowboys tries in the rout, especially in the second half
  • Every time the visitors crossed, the ground DJ played the 1980s club anthem
  • It angered former Origin legend Martin Lang who called the taunts ‘pathetic’

Former NRL prop Martin Lang feared nothing during his playing days, but the DJ at Gold Coast Titans games has raised his hackles with their taunts at opposition teams.

Lang is a Titans season ticket holder and was on hand to watch the club being dismantled 32-6 by the in-form North Queensland Cowboys on Thursday night.

After surging into the NRL finals last season and coming within a single play of toppling heavyweights the Sydney Roosters, the Titans have been massive disappointments in 2022.

The club has won just three NRL games and sits second last on the ladder, only above the battling Bulldogs.

However, it was the choice of music at the venue that Lang found most disappointing, with the Titans DJ choosing to poke fun at the Cowboys every time they scored a try by playing the 1980s anthem Girls Just Want To Have Fun

‘I’m a Gold Coast Titans season ticket holder…but playing Cyndi Lauper’s ‘girls just want to have fun’ [sic] every week when the opposition team scores yet another try is indicative of the club’s attitude and why they are where they are.. It’s pathetic,’ Lang posted.

Another NRL fan latched onto the Tweet and posted: ‘Some of their players are definitely showing their true colours at the moment’.

Continuing with the Cyndi Lauper puns, Courier Mail journalist Peter Badel posted: ‘This is the tweet of the year. They should play time after time instead’.

‘Lol they should play it when the Titans run out on to the field instead,’ another fan replied.

It was the Titans’ eighth loss in nine matches and was compounded by the loss of star fullback Jayden Campbell to a hamstring injury. To pull off a miraculous surge into the NRL finals the Gold Coast club will now need to win at least nine of their last 11 matches.

The Titans have plenty of soul-searching to do in a bid to find improvement. The club will likely need to win at least nine of its last 13 matches to be a chance at playing finals again in 2022

Under-pressure coach Justin Holbrook is keeping the faith – for now.

‘We know we’re miles off but we will keep working at it and string some wins together,’ he said after the match.

‘We’re definitely not giving up. We’re not giving in. We’ve got to either not make the errors or defend them. We’re falling short in a lot of areas.

‘We’ve got to compete harder.’
