Merv Hughes rips into fan who accused the Aussie cricket legend of telling his brother to ‘shut the F up’ in the toilets during the Ashes Test at Edgbaston

  • Ex-pace bowler accused of foul-mouthed outburst
  • Hughes didn’t pull punches as he defended himself
  • Was at Edgbaston while hosting Ashes tour for fans

Aussie sporting icon Merv Hughes has unloaded on a cricket fan who accused the former fast bowler of verbally abusing his brother in the toilets at Edgbaston during the thrilling conclusion to the first Ashes Test on Tuesday.

The fan looped Hughes in on Twitter as he posted the message: ‘@MervHughes332 any reason you told my brother to shut the f**k up today in the Edgbaston toilet when he simply asked you how the game was going. D**khead’.

Hughes wasted little time posting his reply: ‘You were there were you …. Heard the full conversation – your as bigga d**khead as your brother!’

The former paceman is in England as he hosts an Ashes tour for fans and he had been glued to the action as Australia‘s Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon fought their way to one of the great victories in Ashes history.

Hughes was his typical feisty self as he pulled no punches while responding to a fan who said he unleashed a foul-mouthed outburst in the toilets at Edgbaston

Twitter users got stuck into Hughes’ accuser in their replies to the first post.

‘I’m gonna have a guess that if that happened, it was more than likely your brother was impersonating Ollie Robinson and he just got what he deserved,’ one wrote, referencing English bowler Robinson after he was criticised for a foul-mouthed tirade at Australia’s Usman Khawaja.

‘Cricket legend taunted in the toilets by a nobody. Yeah, how’s that honestly going to end?’ wrote another fan.

‘Poms getting carved up on and off the field as per usual forever living in our shadow,’ said a third commenter.

In contrast, Twitter users had a field day with Hughes’ reply as they backed him to the hilt.

‘Merv off the long run sends all three stumps cartwheeling,’ one wrote.

‘Solid Merv. Well played,’ added another, while a third comment read, ‘Certainly didn’t let that one go through to the keeper Merv.’

Since his retirement from the game, Hughes has kept busy as a radio and TV personality with his own fishing show on Channel Seven.

He – and every other Australian fan at Edgbaston – thrilled to the gripping run chase as the Aussies hunted down England’s target of 281 with just two wickets to spare.

Hughes previously surprised fans of the baggy green when he backed England’s Ollie Robinson after he appeared to tell Khawaja to ‘f**k off, you f**king p***k’ after taking his wicket in the first innings.

‘Is it really coming to a point where a bowler can’t celebrate a wicket?’ he told Code Sports.

‘Must be a slow news day if you’re trying to make something out of that!’
