New York Mets star Edwin Diaz has spoken out following his likely season-ending knee injury suffered while celebrating a Puerto Rico win at the World Baseball Classic.
Diaz left in a wheelchair following a right knee patellar tendon injury postgame Wednesday night.
He has since had surgery, with his timeline to return reported to sit at approximately eight months.
Mets fans were left as distraught after the relief pitcher – who just re-signed with New York to the tune of a five-year, $102million deal – was listed as an out for the MLB season.
‘To all my beloved fans, especially the Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am doing well and healing,’ Diaz wrote on his social media platforms late Thursday night.

Diaz looked in promising form ahead of his return to Queens, pitching a perfect ninth inning to close out Puerto Rico’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic.
Puerto Rican players were jumping together in the infield when Díaz collapsed to the ground, and he quickly reached for his right leg. The righty was in tears, unable to put any weight on the leg.
Díaz’s brother and Cincinnati pitcher Alexis Díaz, was also crying as Edwin was taken away. Mets teammate and Puerto Rico shortstop Francisco Lindor stood nearby with his hands on his head.
The 29-year-old is one of baseball’s top closers. He posted 32 saves in each of the past two seasons with the Mets, earning his second All-Star Game nod in 2022.
Diaz was an All-Star with the Seattle Mariners in 2018, when he led the majors with 57 saves.
He is 16-29 with a 2.93 ERA with 205 saves across the past seven seasons.
