  • CEO Darren Eales says investment will be ‘methodical and sustainable’

Newcastle will spend as much as Financial Fair Play allows this summer, with club chiefs hailing the ‘unbelievable’ job Eddie Howe has done in taking them to the Champions League.

CEO Darren Eales says investment will continue to be ‘methodical and sustainable’, but the club recognise the need to build a squad capable of competing on a European and domestic front next season.

‘The reality is, we’re always going to spend what we can under FFP, and that’s a great thing,’ said Eales. ‘I can say, hand on heart, the club will always be doing its best to get to where we want to. But we’ve got to make sure we do it methodically and in a way that’s sustainable.

‘We’ve got to savour this moment because we’ve got to the Champions League. It doesn’t mean we want to rest on our laurels, we’re going to build for next year, but it’s really important when we build that team that we bring in the right characters, the right people that fit.’

Howe has placed great emphasis on the improvement of players – those he inherited and has brought in – and Eales said: ‘With Eddie, it’s unbelievable to see what he’s done with the squad, how he’s galvanised them. We’ve got a great pair of hands there with Eddie, he’s just unbelievable. The club is in safe hands with Eddie and Dan (Ashworth), in terms of knowing what it is we’re looking for.

‘We’ve seen at other clubs, it isn’t just the amount of money you spend, it’s how you spend it. He’s building his team. We’ve already got a club with a bedrock that knows exactly what it is to be Newcastle.’

Eales, speaking at the True Faith end-of-season talk-in, added: ‘Champions League qualification is pretty remarkable. I think if you’d have said at the start of the season we’d have had this spot, we were just looking for progression.

‘It’s amazing for the city, it’s amazing for the club. It’s remarkable what Eddie has done with the team.’
