Newcastle: Diego Carlos is now set to STAY at Sevilla after Magpies have ‘important offer’ rejected

Sevilla sporting director Monchi believes Diego Carlos will now stay at the club after they rejected what he believes will be Newcastle’s final offer for the player.

Speaking at a LaLiga club spotlight event Monchi said the first contact between Newcastle and Sevilla came a month ago. What he called a ‘very important, respectable’ offer was then made which Sevilla rejected.

Asked if the club feared a late bid that would be too good to turn down Monchi added: ‘We last spoke three days ago. Both sides explained their position and we judged the negotiation to be closed and over. I don’t foresee it reopening.’

He earlier joked that he was ready to take an early holiday having secured the arrival of Anthony Martial from Manchester United. ‘That was an important signing,’ he said. ‘Both because of the player’s quality and because of the club he was coming from’.

Sevilla are just four points off of leaders Real Madrid in the table and with so little time to find a replacement for Diego Carlos, Newcastle’s bid, believed to be in the region of £30million, was rejected, in part, because of its bad timing.

Monchi admitted: ‘the response might have been different had it been in the summer.’

Asked if the big defender was angry at not being allowed to leave he joked: ‘I saw him this morning and he looked happy. The size of him if he had been upset I might have had to change the decision.’

Sevilla’s sporting director Monchi revealed the Magpies made a ‘respectable’ bid for Carlos

‘He is one of the top five three central defenders in Europe; certainly in the top three in Spain. I think maybe after [Real Madrid’s] David Alaba and Edu Militao there is no one better.’

Earlier Sevilla captain Ivan Rakitic said he believed the arrival of Anthony Martial could help the club keep Diego Carlos despite Newcastle offering to triple his wages.

Martial joined on loan this week until the end of the season and Rakitic said: ‘Anthony Martial [coming here] has shown that this is a big club where you can compete for everything. And if he can see it then so can the other players.

‘I can understand those players [who have offers] but they know what they have here. These are young players they will have another window. It’s harder to leave Sevilla now.’

But it appears Newcastle’s reported £30m bid for Carlos (left) came too late in the window

The Sevilla captain also said he trusted Monchi to get the best result for the club.

‘Monchi is the most important man at the club,’ said Rakitic. ‘He “lives” it 24 hours. The first time he was signing me he spoke to me about games that I had played for Basel that even I couldn’t remember!

‘He knows what the team needs. He is not just signing players he is bringing people into his family.’
