Newcastle hope a potential move for Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen may be aided by the London club’s pursuit of Torino defender Perr Schuurs.

The Danish centre back joined Crystal Palace in 2021 from Lyon for £17million, after a season in the Premier League impressing for Fulham on loan.

The Magpies are looking to boost their squad depth as they prepare for a season competing in the Champions League, and Eddie Howe has been plotting a number of moves in the summer window.

AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali is believed to be the club’s No 1 transfer target, and sporting director Dan Ashworth and head of Steve Nickson have been locked in talks with Milanese executives over the potential £55m move.

Newcastle have also brought in Gambian teenager Yankuba Minteh from Danish side OB Odense, but the 18-year-old is set to be sent out on loan at Feyenoord for next season’s campaign.

Andersen still has three years left on his contract with the Eagles, which could see Palace try and ensure that if they lose the player, it is for a high fee, which could stymie Newcastle’s pursuit of the player.

Howe has £75m to spend during the summer window, which could limit his options as he reshapes his squad ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

But his efforts could be aided by Palace’s growing interest in Schuurs, who has impressed during his first season at Torino after moving from Ajax.

Schuurs was initially identified as a potential replacement for Marc Guehi, who has attracted consistent interest from Tottenham

Newcastle have also checked on Hertha Berlin forward Derry Scherhant.

The 20-year-old made 10 Bundesliga appearances last season, scoring once, after breaking through to the senior side after a spell in the German capital’s B team.

There, the player scored 16 goals in his debut season, and his acquisition by Newcastle could see him join the ranks of developing players that the club has chosen to invest in.

Scherhant will reportedly cost the Magpies in the region of £1.5m.
