Nick Kyrgios set to brush Thanasi Kokkinakis to play doubles with American Jack Sock at the US Open

Nick Kyrgios famously won the Australian Open doubles with good mate Thanasi Kokkinakis but he has hinted at brushing his fellow Aussie to pair with Jack Sock at the US Open.

The polarising 2022 Wimbledon finalist has just returned to the court after a six-month injury layoff and is hoping to be in peak form for the grass court season.

Following that, Kyrgios will eye off the US Open where he looks likely to link with Sock, despite winning the 2022 Australian Open doubles with Kokkinakis.

Sock is ranked a lowly 267 in the world in single, but has been surging in doubles with a rise in the ranks to 91.

He was previously No.2 in the world in the doubles and reached out to Kyrgios via Twitter to sound him out for the US Open.

‘Nick Kyrgios wanna run some doubles at the US open?’ Sock asked. 

‘Yeah……….. let’s give them a show,” Kyrgios replied.

Despite only playing three tournaments together previously, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis stormed to the title at Melbourne Park 

Before Kygios and Kokkinakis, the Aussie had teamed up with Jack Sock for the Rod Laver Cup in 2018 where they lost to Team Europe

Sock has won four career ATP singles titles and 17 doubles titles to date, and has career-high rankings of world No. 8 in singles and world No. 2 in doubles.

The American has also been trying his hands at pickleball, recently competing in the Professional Pickleball Association‘s North Carolina Open and winning the mixed doubles title with top-ranked partner Anna Leigh Water.

Kyrgios is the co-owner of Miami Pickleball Club, alongside four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and other celebrities such as American footballer Patrick Mahomes and musician Kygo.   

Kyrgios and Sock have teamed up in doubles before. They united as part of Team World at the Rod Laver Cup in 2018, defeating Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin before ultimately losing to Team Europe.

The duo also paired up at the 2021 Atlanta Open where they progressed to the quarter finals before losing to American Steve Johnson and Aussie Jordan Thompson.

Kokkinakis could be the unlucky third wheel if Kyrgios does proceed to play doubles again with Sock

However Kyrgios teamed with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis last year in Melbourne to capture the duo’s maiden doubles title and some fans have been left unimpressed that will not re-unite at Flushing Meadows.

‘Man the kokk getting dogged again smh,’ added another. 

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis were scheduled to play in the doubles draw at Wimbledon last yeah before they withdrew to focus on their singles campaigns, with Kyrgios reaching the final against Novak Djokovic.

It had been hoped they would re-unite at the 2023 Australian Open but Kyrgios was forced to withdraw with a knee injury.

He also missed the French Open before returning this week at the Stuttgart Open, losing in straight sets to China’s Wu Yibing.

Kyrgios was in clear discomfort during the match and urged his fans to be patient with him.

‘It’s a process to get back to where I was. I know it’s hard for you to see me perform like today, but I need more time and hopefully can get back to where I was.’
