Roos co-captain Jy Simpkin has copped a ‘misconduct’ fine for an unusual incident during St Kilda’s win over North Melbourne on Sunday.

Halfway through the third quarter, Simpkin snatched Mattaes Phillipou’s GPS device from his jumper pocket and threw it away.

The bizarre act was quickly spotted by the umpires and they awarded a 50m penalty, which led an easy goal to Mitch Owens right in front.

The Match Review Officer has also now stepped in, hitting Simpkin with a $1000 fine with an early guilty plea.

‘He’s just got to be better than that,’ journalist Damian Barrett said on AFL Media’s Access All Areas.

‘We can see the remonstrating of Jy himself and (Jack) Ziebell and (Liam) Shiels asking the umpire why he did what he did. It’s simple: He had to pay that free kick and the penalty that comes with it.

‘As a leader of that football club, it has to be paid. You saw the scoreline, they were 11 points down having not scored a goal at all in the first two quarters.

‘They were in the game and that sapped the life out of them.’

AFL great Matthew Lloyd called Simpkin’s actions as ‘undisciplined’.

‘I’m not sure why he (Simpkin) is arguing. If you throw anything … it’s a 50,’ he said.

Most Footy fans agree that Simpkin’s actions are some of the strangest, and most childish, they’ve seen during a match.

‘Did anyone see Jy Simpkin throw Phillipou’s GPS tracker? What an odd thing to do,’ wrote a Twitter user.

‘Hissy fit = at least 4 weeks to recover from the embarrassment,’ said another.

A third commented: ‘Ordinary, real ordinary for a skipper of a team struggling to gain respect. North have had some real great Captains down the years… Teasedale, Aylett, Dench, Greig Schimmlebush, Larking and plenty of others. I can’t think of one who would be so childish to throw anything?’

Others thought the whole incident was hilarious.

‘Phillipou should be thanking him here, that’s an extra 20m and a record top speed,’ said a Reddit user.

‘And I thought Rowell eating grass was bizarre…,’ replied another.

‘On the plus side, finding it shouldn’t be too hard,’ said a third.
