Paul Scholes has claimed Erik ten Hag needs to ‘find a better right-back’ this season in order to get the best out of Jadon Sancho

Sancho, who joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73m, had missed early parts of the season after he chose to take a break from football after concerns arising over his wellbeing

The 21-year-old has played 24 times this season and looks to be one of United’s most promising young talents, scoring two times in his last five league appearences, since returning from that break, becoming a regular face in Ten Hag’s starting eleven.

But Scholes believes that there is more to come from the winger, claiming that he needs better players around him.

Speaking to BT Sport, the former Man United midfielder was asked if Sancho has done enough this season, and said: ‘Not yet I don’t think, I still think there’s a lot more to come from him.

‘He obviously had his issues and problems that the manager dealt with, he came back and scored a couple of goals

‘I still think there’s a player in there, he just needs the right players around him.’

Sancho came on to replace Marcus Rashford during Man United’s 1-0 win against Real Betis on Thursday night.

His footballing journey started at Watford, before moving to Manchester City’s youth set up in 2014.

Dazzling scouts with his excellent skill and goal scoring abilities, Sancho would earn himself a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2017, where he would go on to return an impressive 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games.

During that time, Sancho had several excellent players around him, including the likes of Achraf Hakimi and Erling Haaland, and Scholes believes Man United need more quality players around him to get the best out of the young winger.

‘Remember at Dortmund before, he had a flying right-back going on all the time, which really helped him because he’s not a quick player, he’s more of a skilful player who wants to play football, he wants to play with his centre-forward and right-back.

‘If United can possibly find a better right-back it might make him a different proposition.’

While there is currently a lot of competition for places in United’s starting eleven, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been preferred over Diogo Dalot in the right-back position this season, despite a bout of injury that saw him sidelined earlier this season.

Up top, Wout Weghorst has locked down the centre-forward position in Ten Hag’s team.

But the towering striker has not found the back of the net as much as his manager would have hoped so far this season, failing to score in the Premier League despite making eight appearances.

Meanwhile, Sancho will still have some stiff competition to break into the Red Devil’s forward line with the likes of Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellistri all vying for a spot in Ten Hag’s attack.
