Pep Guardiola‘s future as Manchester City boss has been thrown into doubt after the club were charged with breaking a lengthy list of financial rules on Monday.

The Premier League have imposed charges on City for breaching financial regulations over 100 times from September 2009 up until the 2017-18 season, with their alleged violations relating to revenue, details of manager and player remuneration, UEFA regulations, profitability and sustainability and co-operation with top-flight investigations.

The matter will now be referred to an independent commission, and should the English champions be found guilty they face a range of potential sanctions including a points deduction or even an expulsion.

While it could take years to come to a conclusion, City’s financial charges have cast major doubt over the future of manager Guardiola, with Betfair pricing him at odds-on to leave his post before the start of next season.

The Spaniard is also third in the running to be the Premier League’s next managerial departure, just nine months since he guided City to a fourth league title in five seasons.

However, many fear he could walk away in light of the charges, especially when taking a look back at the threat he made to the club during their recent suspension for Financial Fair Play breaches.

City’s two-year Champions League ban for breaking FFP regulations was eventually upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2020, yet beforehand Guardiola had warned Etihad bosses that he would quit if they ever ‘lied’ to him about the extent of their financial dealings.

He revealed earlier this year: ‘If I defend the people and the club it’s because I work with them. When I asked about suspicions or if our people have done something, then I say to them, “tell me”.

‘I said to them “if you lie to me, the day after I’m not here, I will be out and you will not be my friend any more.” But I look at them and believe them 100 per cent from day one. So I defend the club because of that.’
