Peter Schmeichel admits he will ‘hold his hands up’ to Man City if they win the treble

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel admits he will ‘hold his hands up’ to Man City if they win the treble, as they have played ‘the best football he has ever seen’ this season

Peter Schmeichel feels Man United will have to ‘hold their hands up’ to City if they complete their treble by beating Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

The legendary goalkeeper played in the Red Devils side that won the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League in 1999, but feels Pep Guardiola‘s side are currently playing ‘the best football he has ever seen.’

Schmeichel made 56 appearances for the Red Devils that season, as United completed what was at that point the only treble in English football.

After winning the league and FA Cup, City are a win away from matching the achievement, and the 59-year-old felt they were deserving of the honour.

On his own treble success, Schmeichel said: ‘It’s been a long time since we did that in 1999. It was probably the best period of my professional life.

‘No doubt about that. I was extremely proud of making supporters so happy. It’s something we’ve been talking about ever since.’

On the Cityzens, who Schmeichel also represented at the end of his career, he added: ‘Man City have been playing so well this season and actually having the chance, one more win away from that, has brought all that back.’

‘I can’t remember having talked about it [the 1999 treble] as much as I have in the last two weeks. And if it’s broken by Manchester City you just have to hold your hands up because they have been absolutely fantastic this year.

‘They have played the best football. Only going back to the semifinal at the Etihad, the first 45 minutes are probably the best half of football I have ever seen. It will be well deserved. But they’ve got to go past Inter Milan which is no easy task.’

Standing in City’s way are Simone Inzaghi’s Inter, who are chasing a double after winning the Coppa Italia.

The Italian side are clear underdogs, but do have pedigree in the tournament after winning it three times in their history.

Their most recent success came in 2010, when the Nerazzurri won a treble of their own under Jose Mourinho.

Inzaghi is something of a cup final specialist and has won seven in his managerial career with Inter and Lazio.
