Peyton Hillis is not breathing via a ventilator anymore and is ‘on the road to recovery’ following last week’s swimming accident, his girlfriend has revealed.
The former NFL running back reportedly rescued his two children from drowning at a Pensacola beach in Florida on Wednesday, but was airlifted to a local hospital with lung and kidney damage as a result.
Doctors expressed concern of his kidneys earlier this week, as reported by Memphis’ WREG.com.

The 36-year-old Hillis reportedly saved both his children from potentially drowning, but ended up in intensive care for treatment on his lungs and kidneys as a result. Both children – Hillis’ son, Orry, and his younger daughter – are safe and neither needed to be hospitalized
But Hillis’ partner Angela Cole has given a positive update regarding his progress.
Alongside a reel of the pair together, she wrote on her Instagram profile: ‘A hero. So proud of this man and so incredibly grateful for family and this incredible hospital.
‘Peyton is off the ventilator and is on the road to recovery. Please continue to pray for, he’s still got a way ahead of him, but thank you for all your prayers and love and support thus far.
‘It truly makes all the difference. Today was a good day.’
