PGA Championship organisers reveal they ARE planning to restart play at Wentworth this weekend

PGA Championship organisers have said they are planning to restart play at Wentworth this weekend after suspending operations following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. 

While flags on the grounds were lowered to half mast on Thursday afternoon and play was scrapped on Friday after Buckingham Palace announced the Queen had died peacefully a Balmoral. 

However, the event organisers for the PGA Championship are hopeful of restarting play once they review protocol guidance from Buckingham Palace. They have also said they will ‘align’ their actions ‘with what other major sporting events in the UK are doing’.

They released the following statement: ‘We remain hopeful of restarting the BMW PGA Championship at some stage over the weekend.

‘We will take that decision once we have had the chance to review protocol guidance from Buckingham Palace in addition to aligning with what other major sporting events in the UK are doing. We will update you as soon as we have further information.’

At the time of the suspension, which came with 30 players yet to complete their first round, Fleetwood was jointly top of the leaderboard having excelled on his return to play after a seven-week absence to mourn the death of his mother. 

The world No 29 endured the worst of the stormy weather but delivered the finest of first rounds to shoot an eight-under 64, with six birdies in the final seven holes of a bogey-free day. 

It tied him with Andy Sullivan and Norway’s Viktor Hovland, one stroke ahead of a third Englishman, Matthew Jordan. Rory McIlroy was among a cluster at four under in the flagship event of the DP World Tour.
