Phil Foden is suffering from appendicitis and has undergone surgery meaning he is unavailable for England’s clash against Ukraine today.
James Maddison is set to start in Gareth Southgate’s attack ahead of Jack Grealish in the Euro 2024 qualifier at Wembley.
But Foden, who was also hopeful of starting, will miss the game after falling ill.
It is understood Foden started feeling unwell after training on Saturday and has since had surgery.
The news comes as a blow to Southgate ahead of the game against the Ukrainians, although it is unclear whether Foden would have started ahead of Maddison had he been fit.

Foden’s surgery could have an impact on Man City’s title run-in over the next few weeks
But the development will also come as a significant concern to Manchester City ahead of the season run-in.
Foden will have to undergo a period of rehabilitation after the operation and at the very least will be a doubt for next weekend’s crunch clash against Liverpool.
Appendix operations can take up to four weeks to recover from.
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson is hopeful of returning to the England starting XI this afternoon in place of Kalvin Phillips.
Southgate will also be forced into a change at left back with Luke Shaw suspended after picking up a red card against Italy on Friday night.
Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier are vying to replace Shaw.
