Canberra Raiders forward Joseph Tapine was fortunate his season didn’t end instantly after he was the victim of a shocking cannonball tackle – only to then be sin-binned against the Titans.

In ridiculous scenes at Cbus Super Stadium, the Kiwi international resented the dangerous third man in effort from Gold Coast hooker Aaron Booth – and threw a punch in retaliation.

Incredibly, referee Ben Cummins then sent a bemused Tapine for a ten minute spell in the first half.

In March, Fox Sports commentator Mick Ennis called on the NRL to crackdown on cannonball tackles.

Ennis was adamant the NRL has a duty of care to all players and wants the dangerous tackle banned.

‘We need to get those tackles out of the game. They’re just really, really ugly and it’s going to do someone real damage,’ he said at the time.

‘We can’t keep rolling the dice, we can’t keep waiting until someone does an ACL (knee injury) to then outlaw it.

‘It’s so much weight coming into a part of the body that’s unprotected, that’s the dangerous thing.

‘The NRL has to be stronger because there has to be a duty of care there because somebody is going to get hurt.’
