Manchester City let a second consecutive Champions League final appearance slip through their fingers in catastrophic fashion away at Real Madrid – meaning Pep Guardiola and his players were ripped apart in L’Equipe’s notorious ratings.

The Premier League champions led by two goals on aggregate heading into the final minute of Wednesday’s semi-final second leg, having extended their lead when Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring with 17 minutes remaining at the Bernabeu.

However, in one of the most remarkable European comebacks for many a year, Madrid substitute Rodrygo scored twice in the space of two sensational minutes to send the tie to extra-time.

And just five minutes into that extra period, Karim Benzema tucked away the winner from the penalty spot when Ruben Diaz brought him down inside the box.

It was a disastrous late collapse from City, who were on the verge of setting up an all-English final against Liverpool in Paris later this month.

Guardiola and Co were blasted by L’Equipe in their post-match ratings, with the City boss rated 4/10 after his side lost ‘serenity and control’ late on.

Kevin de Bruyne received an even more brutal rating of 3/10 for his ‘transparent’ performance on the night, being accused of ‘missing his match’ and playing ‘without influence’.

The French publication were also critical of Dias, giving the Portuguese defender a 4/10 for ‘a lack of serenity in the Madrid storm’ which resulted in him conceding the fatal penalty.

Gabriel Jesus was another 3/10 for City, earning a brutally low score after generally failing to trouble Madrid’s backline throughout the second leg.

While City were torn to shreds, L’Equipe heaped praise on a number of Los Blancos stars for their incredible late turnaround at the Bernabeu.

Rodrygo, whose double off the bench brought Carlo Ancelotti’s men back from the dead, received an 8/10 rating for his last-gasp heroics, while Dani Carvajal was scored the same for an impressive display.

On Carvajal, they wrote: ‘Commitment and aggressiveness at all times. He was never faulted defensively and cleared several hot balls. His attacking contribution and the quality of his crosses, including the one that allowed Real to snatch the extension, were also decisive.’

Not all Madrid men were commended, nevertheless, as Luka Modric was marked 4/10 for an untypically disappointing performance.

But the same could not be said for Ancelotti, who was rated 7/10 because ‘his tactical changes with the entry into play of Rodrygo and [Eduardo] Camavinga above all tipped the match.’

Benzema, Casemiro, Nacho Fernandez and Thibaut Courtois also received 7/10 ratings on the night.
