Real Madrid ‘could turn to £70m-rated Inter star Lautaro Martinez’ if they fail to sign £100m Harry Kane from Spurs… as they eye a replacement for Karim Benzema after his Saudi move

  • Real Madrid are looking for a striker with Karim Benzema set to leave the club
  • They are interested in signing Harry Kane who has one year left on his deal
  • Lautaro Martinez is an option if they fail in their pursuit of the Tottenham star

Real Madrid are reportedly thinking of making a move for Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez if they fail in their pursuit of Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.

Los Blancos have been strongly linked with a move for the £100m rated striker since it was confirmed that Karim Benzema would be leaving the club after 14 years.

Manchester United are also in the race for the England captain but Tottenham owner Daniel Levy is reluctant to see his star player leave this summer – despite the risk of losing him on a free in a year’s time.

Levy is more likely to sanction a sale to a team abroad and reports have suggested that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is going to attempt to bring down the Kane’s price.

However, the Spanish outfit are also drawing up contingency plans should their efforts be unsuccessful.

David Ornstein of The Athletic says that Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez has emerged as an option.

The 25-year-old has scored 28 goals in 56 appearances in all competitions this season and played a big role in Inter reaching Saturday’s Champions League final.

Martinez was also a member of the Argentina team that won the World Cup in Qatar and would reportedly cost in the region of £70m.

Kane, on the other hand, is still to win a trophy despite his status as one of the world’s greatest strikers.

Mail Sport reported on Sunday that sources have indicated Levy will quote Madrid a minimum starting price of £100million for Kane.

There is, though, believed to be room to negotiate and it appears that Real Madrid are keen to put that to the test with this reported opening bid of £69m (€80m).

Though Manchester United are interested, Levy is adamant he does not want to sell his club’s prized asset to a domestic rival.

Real Madrid therefore have leverage to negotiate a lower fee of below £100m knowing Levy does not want to do business with another English club.

Tottenham will lose Kane for nothing next year if they do not sell him in the next two transfer windows with his contract expiring.

It remains to be seen whether Kane would give serious consideration to leaving England for Spain.
